- What is a funnel project?
A funnel project is a group of libraries (or catalogers from various libraries) that have joined together to contribute authority records to the LC-NACO authority file. Funnel participants usually work in the same subject area, such as the NACO Music Project, Art NACO, African American Subject Funnel Project, or they may be regionally based, like the North Dakota Funnel. There are also language based groups, such as CJK NACO and NACO Hebraica. Funnel projects are an efficient means of contribution, where one person or institution coordinates the project. There may be members at all levels of expertise; however, LC deals solely with the coordinator.
- Who may join CJK NACO?
Anyone who catalogs CJK languages may apply. Institutions are invited to join the Project on a voluntary basis. Lone librarians working with relatively small CJK collections are especially encouraged to participate. It is essential to have your institution's support and commitment to the project.
- How to join CJK NACO as an institution?
It is encouraged to join CJK NACO as an institution if there is more than one individual contributing CJK headings. When the Project coordinator notifies the Coop Team that a new library/unit is being added to the funnel project, LC notifies the utility of their eligibility. Each library must request NACO authorization(s) from OCLC. No later than a month before training, the NACO CONTACT submits a request form directly to OCLC for a NACO authorization. The NACO COORDINATOR will have notified the utility that you will be doing so. Use the online OCLC Access & Authorization form. external link For instructions on completing this form, refer to Luanne Goodson's letter. Once the online form has been submitted, OCLC will respond within 10 business days. If you receive no confirmation or need to consult with OCLC about the authorization request, please contact: Luanne Goodson of the OCLC Quality Control Section at phone: 800.848.5878 x5274
Please refer to "Preparing for NACO Training, #16" for further information.
- May an individual cataloger join CJK NACO?
Yes. The CJK NACO can often provide feedback, review, and expert consultation to catalogers in specialized areas more expeditiously than other mechanisms. It is encouraged that catalogers who wish to join the CJK NACO should discuss this option with their institutions and the funnel coordinator, and should obtain support from their institution for participating in the CJK NACO.
- Who may join CJK NACO as a reviewer/mentor?
Experienced NACO catalogers, and those with expertise in specialized areas, e.g., classical work, legal material, music etc. may join the Project as reviewers or mentors. Please contact the Project coordinator directly.
- My institution is already a NACO participant. Can I still
join the CJK NACO Project?
Absolutely! A NACO candidate library or a CJK unit within a library lacking a MARC 21 organization code may also apply for a separate MARC code. Open your browser to the MARC Code List for Organizations to view information on requesting a new MARC 21 code.
- What are the costs involved in participating in the CJK NACO Project?
There is no fee for joining the project. The inherent costs are the time and effort to make contributions for name authority records.
- Are there any requirements for joining?
There is no requirement to become a member, but it is necessary to have training and/or initial review period.
- What support does the CJK NACO Project provide to its members?
Participants receive CJK oriented training and training materials upon request. Review will be done upon completion of the training and before participants independently contribute authority records to the utilities. Catalogers working with specialized collection may receive support from colleagues in the field through participating Project. Related documentation (LC-PCC PSs, MARC 21 Authority Format) are available from the PCC NACO homepage. LC's liaisonto the CJK NACO Project and/or PCC NACO coordinator act as a resource person for the coordinator, to answer cataloging questions, interprete the LC-PCC PSs, etc. Through interaction with the Library of Congress Policy, Training, and Cooperative Programs Division (PTCP) and other PCC members, questions and issues are shared and identified and resolved in a collaborative effort.
- Do all CJK NACO members have to belong to OCLC?
No, it is not strictly necessary to belong to a bibliographic utility in order to participate in a NACO funnel if the coordinator of that funnel is willing to provide the necessary support for its members. It is not required for all funnel members to belong to the same utility, but this will depend on the experience, resources available to, and bibliographic access of the funnel coordinator.
- Is there a quota for CJK NACO members?
No. During the training period, it is helpful to regularly contribute as many records as possible, but quality is much more important than quantity.
- As a member of the CJK NACO Project where are my
contributions statistically tallied?
Contributions will be added to the institution's total that is represented by the MARC 21 code in the record.
- Where can I find more information about CJK NACO or the
PCC and/or the NACO Program in general?
You may find more information about the PCC and NACO in general on the NACO Home Page. If you are interested in becoming a CJK NACO participant, contact:
