Bartók-Freund Collection

|| About the Collection ||

This is a small but important collection of source materials relating to the life and work of composer Bela Bartók (1881-1945), originally compiled by the Hungarian pianist, Etelka Freund, a close friend of the composer. Some of the musical scores located in this collection are proof copies of first editions of early works by Bartók, and contain his autograph annotations and corrections. These documents are of considerable importance, particularly in light of the scarcity of primary source materials from this early period in Bartók’s career. For a full descriptive summary of Bartók’s corrections, see: “The Primary Sources of Bartók’s Works” in Studia Musicologica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 23, 1981.
