|| About the Collection ||
This small collection of printed and manuscript music as well as correspondence to and from composer Alban Berg was originally compiled by his student and biographer, Willi Reich (1898-1980). Reich studied musicology at the University in Vienna where he earned his doctorate in 1934; he also studied composition there with both Berg and Anton Webern. Included in this collection are manuscripts and printed music, many with performance markings, and approximately 300 pieces of correspondence between Berg and Reich that date from the last seven years of Berg’s life. In Berg’s final letter from November 4, 1935, he informs Reich that he has only one or two months to live (he died on December 24 of that year). Approximately three-quarters of the 300 letters are from Reich to Berg, with the balance being Berg’s replies.
