David Meyrowitz (1867-1943) and Louis Gilrod (1879-1930). Die Fire Korbunes [The Fire Victims]. New York: Theodore Lohr Co., 1911. Sheet music cover. Irene Heskes Collection. Music Division About this image
|| About the Collection ||
The material in this collection is based on Lawrence Marwick’s list of copyright entries, including both Yiddish American plays and music. Irene Heskes added the names of composers, lyricists, arrangers, theaters, copyright proprietors, and information about whether the song was published and by whom. Beyond information on a genre of American music, the book is a resource and access guide to the large number of Yiddish American popular songs available in the collections of the Music Division. The Yiddish American musical theater began in the Bowery area of the Lower East Side of New York City after 1880 and quickly expanded through New York and into many communities in the United States. This art form, with its genre of popular Yiddish songs, not only served a special Jewish patronage, but also served as a portal by which Jewish music entered mainstream American life.
