Lukas Foss Collection

|| About the Collection ||

At the center of this large collection are the manuscripts and sketches for most of the compositions of the noted composer, conductor and teacher Lukas Foss. The collection is also rich in correspondence between Foss and many of the other leading composers of the 20th century. The business and subject files contain information on many of Foss’ commissions, performances, and teaching relationships involving the Buffalo, Chicago, Cincinnati and Cleveland orchestras and the American Symphony, as well as other orchestras, festivals, universities and conservatories across the country. One of the many interesting items is an early (age 7-8) attempt at an opera using the fairy tale which later became Foss’ opera, "Griffelkin."
