|| About the Collection ||
The Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection is organized into three sections: music manuscripts, printed music, and papers of American composer Edward MacDowell (1860-1908); papers of his wife, Marian Nevins MacDowell (1857-1956); and papers of the MacDowell Colony, founded in 1908 at the Peterborough, New Hampshire, farm of the MacDowells, and continuing today as a leading artists’ residency program. In addition to Edward MacDowell’s music manuscripts and first editions of his music, the collection includes correspondence of the MacDowells, biographical materials, writings, programs, press clippings, business papers, and photographs.

- Provenance
- Edward MacDowell donated to the Library of Congress his Zweite Suite, Op. 48, in 1903, initiating the Library’s quest to gain MacDowell’s scores and papers, as well as those of other leading American musicians. The remainder of the collection was acquired through gifts and purchases of MacDowell’s music manuscripts, first editions, and papers. Templeton Strong gave 130 letters and 11 holograph scores in 1930; in 1969 the Edward MacDowell Association donated early records of the MacDowell Colony, supplementing this gift in the 1970s; in 1972, LC purchased a large collection of music manuscripts and papers. Many items in the collection were previously cataloged as ML96 (music manuscripts of MacDowell) or M3.3 (first editions of MacDowell’s works).
