|| About the Collection ||
The Mendelssohn Collection is a subset of the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation Collection, which includes not only the quintet of Stradavari instruments given to the Library by Mrs. Whittall, but also a rich collection of autograph manuscripts by major European composers. The present Mendelssohn Collection consists chiefly of music manuscripts and letters of Mendelssohn and other members of the Mendelssohn family, libretti, programs, iconography and other papers dating from the 19th century as well as research materials concerning Mendelssohn assembled by William Freemantle in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

- In 1945, the materials that were to become known as the Mendelssohn Collection were acquired for inclusion into the Gertrude Clarke Whittall Foundation of Autograph Musical Scores and Autograph letters. In 1947, additional Mendelssohn materials were sent by J. Alex Symington of Leeds, England. Most of the materials in the Mendelssohn Collection were collected by William T. Freemantle.
