Introduction and highlights of 1999.2.
Fiscal 1999 was a milestone year for the Congressional Research Service (CRS), marking eighty-five years of service to the Congress.3.
During fiscal 1999, the Copyright Office advised Congress on national and international issues; created and maintained a public record of copyright registrations and recorded documents; administered compulsory licenses and statutory obligations; furthered the effort to develop an automated registration, recordation, and deposit system; and offered technical, legal, and educational assistance in the international arena.4.
The Law Library of Congress the world's largest law library provided Congress and other constituents with foreign, international, and comparative legal research and reference, as well as with American law reference.5.
Library Services in fiscal 1999 pursued an ambitious program of nine annual performance plan goals. Foremost among the objectives (goal 1) was the major effort to implement the Library's first integrated library system (ILS) within budget by the target date of October 1, 1999.6.
During the year, the Library's National Digital Library (NDL) Program significantly progressed toward its goal of making a critical mass of American historical materials accessible to all Americans by 2000, the Library's Bicentennial year.7.
During fiscal 1999, the Library planned for its upcoming Bicentennial in 2000, which will be celebrated with a commemorative stamp and coin and with other events and initiatives aimed at honoring the nation's library and libraries everywhere.8.
