"A Contested Historical Landscape: Understanding and Interpreting
the Civil War"
by Gary W. Gallagher, the John L. Nau III, professor of the History
of the American Civil War, University of Virginia, and is a coeditor
of The Library of Congress Civil War Desk Reference. He
is also editor of the "Civil War America" series at the
University of North Carolina Press; author of The Confederate
War (1997), Lee and His Army in Confederate History
(2001); shared the 1998 Lincoln Prize, and received the 1999 Fletcher
Pratt Award for the best nonfiction book on the Civil War.
