CONSER Publication Pattern Initiative

Harvard University Library originally compiled this list, adding abbreviations to selections from Appendix B of AACR2 (1998 revision). Holdings Statements for Bibliographic Items (ANSI/NISO Z39.71-1999) instructs us in section 5.5.4.2 to use abbreviations from Appendix B or from other standard lists, or to create them according to the rules of Information and documentation -- Bibliographic description and references -- Rules for the Abbreviation of Bibliographic Items (ISO 832: 1994).  In a series of words, no space is used after an abbreviation that ends with a full stop (section 3.2.1).

Non-roman terms are given here in the vernacular and romanization, but romanizations should be used in holdings records when needed (Z39.71-1999, sec.5.5.4.2).

Please include the full form of the caption, your suggested abbreviation, its language, and your email address. If you cannot input diacritics in your message, please spell out the diacritics or at least indicate that its diacritics are omitted. Suggested abbreviations will be verified against standard lists and ISO 832 and added to this document. Thank you.
