Course revision
Current revision: Spring 2005
Content has been revised to reflect changes in the 2004 Update to the 2002
AACR2. Course materials have been reformatted and are offered in
downloadable electronic
files.
Most changes were to Session 7: When do I need a new record? The numbering
of AACR2 rules for major and minor changes were renumbered with the Sept.
2004 AACR2 Rule Revision: 21.2A1-2 were renumbered 21.2C2a-b. Minor changes
formerly listed under 21.2A2 and referred to by alphabetic designation are
now listed under 21.2C2b and numbered by lower case Roman numerals. A few
small changes were made in other sessions. The Evaluation form has been changed
in format and moved to appendix H in the trainee manual to make it easier
for trainees to find.

Serial Holdings Workshop (Revised 2002)
Description
This course provides the basic principles of creating holdings records and publication patterns with a focus on serials. All materials are based on the MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD) and ANSI/NISO Z39.71--1999. The course includes background information on why holdings are important and a brief description of the development of the standards and instructions and exercises on creating formatted and free text holdings and publication patterns. The instructions and exercises are system-neutral but the course includes time for discussion of local system implementation.
Audience
The course is designed for those who are new to the MARC Holdings Format, including those who have created holdings records using other mechanisms (e.g., OCLC's local data record). It is designed primarily for those who will create holdings records but is also useful for managers and system designers wishing to know more about the format and its uses.
Contact hours
The course is designed as a one and a half day (10.5 hours) session. It is strongly recommended that 1 1/2 to 2 days be given to allow ample time for exercises and discussion, due to the nature of the course materials. The second half day includes extra time for exercises, system-implementation discussion, and problem solving. The course includes several optional sessions that can be omitted if a one-day workshop is to be given.
Course revision
Current revision: June 2002
System-specific information has been added to enable trainee’s to better grasp how the format is used in local systems. Examples have been added or replaced that are more appropriate for beginners. Additional enhancements include a session on trends in holdings.

Advanced Serials Cataloging Workshop (Revised 2005)
Description
The Advanced Serials Cataloging Workshop is an in-depth course on the rules and practices applied to original cataloging of serials. However, there are no specific instructions for electronic serials included in this workshop. While the course focuses on printed serials, the instructions are applicable to serials in any format. It is timed for release in 2002 when the forthcoming revision of chapter 12 of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR), 2nd edition revised is published. Course topics include:
Audience
The course is designed for people who have at least taken the Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop or who have been active serials catalogers for more than one year and are familiar with MARC serials tagging and fundamental approaches to serials cataloging. While attendees who do not have this background in serials may find parts of the workshop useful, the instructors will not have sufficient time to review basic serials cataloging.
Workshop hosts should be careful to advertise this particular workshop so that attendees with little or no serials cataloging experience understand that basic serials cataloging will not be covered.
Contact hours
The course is a two-day workshop, consisting of 6.5 hours each day for a total of 13 contact hours. It combines lecture with exercises and time for questions, answers and discussion. It will also serve as an excellent self-study resource.
