General Information

The Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) provides standardized training materials and trained trainers in the field of continuing resources. Rather than providing the actual training workshops, SCCTP relies on library associations, networks, and institutions to sponsor workshops, using SCCTP materials and a team of trainers.

The vision of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program (SCCTP) is to increase the pool of knowledgeable serials and integrating resource catalogers and raise the quality of cataloging records contributed to shared databases. The educational components of the program are designed to be affordable, authoritative, and effective. The program will be evaluated on an ongoing basis to ensure cooperation among sponsoring agencies, ease of administration, adequate funding, and attainment of educational objectives.

The Cooperative Online Serials (CONSER) Program, a component of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) coordinates the program. The North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG), American Library Association's Serials Education Committee, and OCLC network affiliates have contributed to various aspects of the program.

The SCCTP Steering Committee has assisted in the development of the program and continues to monitor its progress.

Goals of the Program

• Provide an ongoing program of serials cataloging instruction for participants with varying levels of skills and expertise.
• Provide uniform core training materials that are adaptable to meet specific user needs.
• Provide a pool of trainers comprised of CONSER catalogers, other continuing resource catalogers, and holdings experts.
• Provide training that utilizes a variety of delivery methods, such as workshops and distance learning.
• Provide a broader understanding of the CONSER Program, its publications, goals, and benefits to all who work with continuing resources.

How SCCTP Works

There are four basic components to SCCTP:

• Developing course materials based on CONSER documentation that are sold through the Library of Congress's Cataloging Distribution Service.
• Providing train-the-trainer sessions for experienced catalogers and holdings experts.
• Working with and encouraging training providers to sponsor the training workshops using SCCTP course materials and trained-trainers.
• Reviewing and evaluating. Course materials will be revised to make them more effective and keep them up-to-date. Trainers will be also evaluated based on course evaluations from training providers.

In the future, we also hope to be able to provide distance education through course materials mounted on this Web site and opportunities for more in-depth mentoring.
