Home page/catalog: www.loc.gov/cds (how to contact CDS) CONSER Standard Record Workshop (2007)Description The workshop focuses on data elements required in the CONSER standard record. All materials are based on the CONSER standard record documentation and LCRIs developed to cover new practices in dealing with description of serials title, uniform title, designation, etc. The workshop will also cover CONSER’s new practices in coding MARC field 246 for variant titles, fixed fields, etc. The workshop consists of slide presentations with exercises on paper. Trainees will not be using a computer as part of the workshop. Sessions include:
Audience This workshop is intended for catalogers who have been active serials catalogers for more than one year and are familiar with AACR2R, MARC serials tagging, and fundamental approaches to serials cataloging. This course is designed as a supplement to other SCCTP Workshops and for those people wanting to catalog serials following the new CONSER standard. Contact hours The course is designed as a half day (4 hours) classroom session. It is also delivered live online in two 90 minutes sessions. Course revision Current revision: July 2007 Course materials are available from the CONSER Web page. Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop (Being revised -- Contact lhaw@loc.gov for information)Description This course provides the basic principles of serials cataloging for original and copy cataloging for print and electronic serials. The course focuses on the elements contained in the CONSER core record, including appropriate MARC 21 tagging, as well as problem-solving and decision-making relative to serials cataloging. All materials are based on the CONSER Editing Guide and CONSER Cataloging Manual. Audience The course is designed for those new to serials: beginning serials catalogers and technicians and monograph catalogers working with serials. Contact hours The course is designed as a two day session consisting of 6.5 hours each day for a total of 13 contact hours. Course revision Current revision: Spring 2005 Content has been revised to reflect changes in the 2004 Update to the 2002 AACR2. Course materials have been reformatted and are offered in downloadable electronic files. Most changes were to Session 7: When do I need a new record? The numbering of AACR2 rules for major and minor changes were renumbered with the Sept. 2004 AACR2 Rule Revision: 21.2A1-2 were renumbered 21.2C2a-b. Minor changes formerly listed under 21.2A2 and referred to by alphabetic designation are now listed under 21.2C2b and numbered by lower case Roman numerals. A few small changes were made in other sessions. The Evaluation form has been changed in format and moved to appendix H in the trainee manual to make it easier for trainees to find. Course materials and description of files for downloading (from the CDS Web site). Serial Holdings Workshop (Being revised -- Contact lhaw@loc.gov for information)Description This course provides the basic principles of creating holdings records and publication patterns with a focus on serials. All materials are based on the MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data (MFHD) and ANSI/NISO Z39.71--1999. The course includes background information on why holdings are important and a brief description of the development of the standards and instructions and exercises on creating formatted and free text holdings and publication patterns. The instructions and exercises are system-neutral but the course includes time for discussion of local system implementation. Audience The course is designed for those who are new to the MARC Holdings Format, including those who have created holdings records using other mechanisms (e.g., OCLC's local data record). It is designed primarily for those who will create holdings records but is also useful for managers and system designers wishing to know more about the format and its uses. Contact hours The course is designed as a one and a half day (10.5 hours) session. It is strongly recommended that 1 1/2 to 2 days be given to allow ample time for exercises and discussion, due to the nature of the course materials. The second half day includes extra time for exercises, system-implementation discussion, and problem solving. The course includes several optional sessions that can be omitted if a one-day workshop is to be given. Course revision Current revision: 2008 Material has been rearranged and simplified in this revision. There are updated examples, exercises and additional information based on requests from sponsors and trainees. There are some new interpretations of long-standing codes, which are indicated as they occur throughout the text. Course materials and description of files for downloading (from the CDS Web site). Advanced Serials Cataloging Workshop (Revised 2005)Description The Advanced Serials Cataloging Workshop is an in-depth course on the rules and practices applied to original cataloging of serials. However, there are no specific instructions for electronic serials included in this workshop. While the course focuses on printed serials, the instructions are applicable to serials in any format. It is timed for release in 2002 when the forthcoming revision of chapter 12 of the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR), 2nd edition revised is published. Course topics include:
Audience The course is designed for people who have at least taken the Basic Serials Cataloging Workshop or who have been active serials catalogers for more than one year and are familiar with MARC serials tagging and fundamental approaches to serials cataloging. While attendees who do not have this background in serials may find parts of the workshop useful, the instructors will not have sufficient time to review basic serials cataloging. Workshop hosts should be careful to advertise this particular workshop so that attendees with little or no serials cataloging experience understand that basic serials cataloging will not be covered. Contact hours The course is a two-day workshop, consisting of 6.5 hours each day for a total of 13 contact hours. It combines lecture with exercises and time for questions, answers and discussion. It will also serve as an excellent self-study resource. Course revision Current revision: May 2005 Course description, ordering and description of files for downloading (from the CDS Web site).
Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop (Revised 2005)Description Electronic Serials Cataloging Workshop is designed as a hands-on training course for cataloging electronic serials distributed through the Web. This workshop is based on Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR), 2nd edition, including the 2001 amendments and the revised edition published in 2002. It incorporates key revisions of chapter 9, "Electronic resources" and chapter 12 "Continuing resources" that apply to electronic serials, but is not a comprehensive course on serials cataloging. The course is also based on Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, the MARC 21 format, and CONSER specific policies and practices set forth in the CONSER Cataloging Manual and CONSER Editing Guide. The curriculum includes six sessions:
Audience The course is designed for those who have previous serials cataloging experience Contact hours The course is designed as a one day (6.5 hours) session. It has been created for a classroom setting with lecture notes and exercises and is perfect for a training center, in-house instruction, or an excellent self-study resource. Course revision Current revision: Dec. 2005 Course materials and description of files for downloading (from the CDS Web site). Integrating Resources Cataloging (Being revised -- Contact lhaw@loc.gov for information)The course is based on the revised chapters 9 and 12 of AACR2 and covers all integrating resources, with an emphasis on electronic resources. The workshop covers the new rules that have been added to these chapters and will be provide timely guidance to monograph, serials, and electronic resource catalogers who may be responsible for cataloging them. The course contains optional sessions so it can be held in either a one or one-and-a- half day session. The sessions include:
Course revision Current revision: June 2007 This interim version has changes that reflect the implementation of code "i," removal of references to RLG, and some minor changes in examples and in the text. Workshop sponsors and trainers should use this version for the students rather than the older version they will get when they pay CDS for the replication rights. CDS doesn’t yet have the new version. Please contact Les Hawkins, lhaw@loc.gov, for access to the new version after purchasing arrangements have been made with CDS. A newer final version of the Trainee manual will be completed sometime this fall when a PCC working group on integrating resources documentation completes its work. We expect that this final version will include explanation of a provider neutral record for electronic integrating resources, and possibly some CONSER standard record related options, since both CONSER and BIBCO members will be creating records for IRs. Course materials and description of files for downloading (from the CDS Web site).
