I. Introduction
Military science comprises the academic study of the development of military institutions, the relationship of the military to society, and the evolution of military thought. Its approach is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on a variety of sources and methods and including materials that document the organization and description of armies. Materials concerned with strategic and tactical theory, logistics, command and control, and the training and management of troops are also included.
II. Scope
The core materials covered by this statement comprise the collections in Class U and specific classes of Class Z. The collections policy set forth in this statement is closely linked to the treatment of military science in the Library's classification scheme.
III. Research strengths
Published materials in the subject of military science are to be found in the Library's general classified collections and includes the major published source materials required for dissertations and independent research. Included in the collection are all important reference works and a comprehensive selection of important specialized monographs as well as a very extensive collection of journals and major indexing and abstracting services in the field. Numerous specialized microform collections often vital for research complement the classified collections. Many valuable resources can also be found in the Rare Book and Special Collections, Law Library, Manuscript Division, Geography and Map Division, Prints and Photographs Division and the Technical Report Collection in the Science, Technology and Business Division. The military science collection is maintained at an overall Research level(Collecting level 4). Areas of special strength include monographs and serials for the study of United States military science and the study of military organization and situations for most countries of the world.
IV. Comparisons with other major research collections
Most major American research libraries have strong collections in military history (Classes D and F), but not in military science (Class U). Other strong United States military science collections can be found in: University of Michigan and Brown University libraries for early military science collections; and New York Public Library, United States Military Academy Library, and the United States Military History Institute Library, Carlisle Barracks, PA.
V. General policy
