The Library of Congress Office, Nairobi, Kenya, is one of six overseas offices administered by the African/Asian Acquisitions and Overseas Operations Division of the Library. These offices acquire, catalog, preserve, and distribute library and research materials from countries where such materials are essentially unavailable through conventional acquisitions methods.

General Information

The Library of Congress Office, Nairobi, Kenya, acquires and catalogs publications from twenty-nine countries in Africa for the collections of the Library of Congress. These countries are: Angola, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mayotte, Mozambique, Namibia, Reunion, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Somalia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The Nairobi Office first opened its doors in fiscal year 1966 as a National Program for Acquisitions and Cataloging (NPAC) office serving the Library of Congress for eastern and southern African publications. The Cooperative Acquisitions Program for the East Africa Region was initiated in 1992.

Exchange Program

Through formal and informal exchange agreements, the office acquires materials that would otherwise not be available. However, due to the increasing cost of postage and transportation, some exchange programs are being reduced.

Cooperative Acquisitions Program

The Cooperative Acquisitions Program in Nairobi was initiated in 1992. The goal of the program is to provide scholarly journals, newspapers, magazines, and monographs to participating institutions. The materials sent to these institutions are acquired from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The Cooperative Acquisitions Program also provides regional statistical, legal, and local language materials for all countries in the region covered by the office.

In fiscal year 2006, a total of 563 newspapers titles (25,571 issues) were checked in. In order to preserve these newspapers, the Nairobi Office continued to liaise with LC New Delhi on the filming of newspapers. In total, 597 reels (approximately 597,000 pages) were ccollated and shipped to LOC New Delhi for microfilming compared to 356 reels which were processed in the FY 2005. This increase includes an additional 19 new newspaper titles in the list of those filmed by New Delhi.

Great strides were made in 2006 with back issues of Malawian newspapers. The FD submitted a proposal (later approved) to the CAMP group of the Africana Librarians' Council to film approximately 55, 000 pages of Malawian newspapers dating from 1998-2005. The papers were filmed by the CRL with copies of the film sent to LOC in Washington.
