ALSTON
Philip
Alston is Professor of International Law at the European University Institute
in Florence, Italy and co-Director of the Academy of European Law. Prior
to his current position, he held teaching positions at the Australian
National University and several law schools in the United States. In 2000
Alston will be a Visiting Professor at that Global Law School, New York
University. He was appointed as an independent expert by the UN Secretary
General to report on measures to ensure long-term effectiveness of the
UN treaty bodies and he chaired the United Nations Committee on Economic,
Social and Cultural Rights for eight years (1991-98). He has been a consultant
to several United Nations agencies and other international organizations,
among them, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), International
Labor Organization (ILO), Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe (OSCE) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development
(OECD). Alston serves on the editorial or advisory boards of numerous
journals and he is editor of the European Journal of International
Law.
