Thomas
Garfield's Reminiscences about his brother, President
James Garfield
Reminiscence's
about President Garfield by his older brother, Thomas,
in the hand of Thomas's wife, Mary Jane Garfield.
A long (83 pages), important memoir, supplying heretofore
unknown information about the personal and public
life of President James Garfield. Garfield's remarkable
rise from abject poverty to the nation's first office
is described. There are accounts of his education
at Williams College, his career as one of the nation's
youngest college presidents, his service in the Civil
War, and his successes in politics at the local and
national levels as well as information about the private
Garfield. The memoir includes thirty two pages of
Garfield's favorite maxims and sayings. It is a significant
additional to papers of James Garfield, one of the
Library's twenty three presidential collections.
