Gift of
John Kluge

Library of Congress Bicentennial

John Kluge's generosity and leadership of the Madison Council is helping to ensure that the Librarian of Congress's vision of a captivating, highly visible Bicentennial Program becomes a reality. Mr. Kluge became the catalyst for the Bicentennial fund-raising effort by stepping forward in 1996 to make the first gift and challenging other Madison Council members to provide matching funds. This successful effort provided funds for a host of Bicentennial activities celebrating the richness and diversity of the Library's collections after 200 years of sustained patronage by the U.S. Congress and the American people. His leadership by example has encouraged many other Members to step forward with Gifts to the Nation and gifts of general support for this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
