Jimmy Santiago Baca
Poet Jimmy Santiago Baca was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico and grew up in an orphanage. At the age of 21 he was convicted on charges of drug possession and served six years in prison. During this time he taught himself to read and write and began to compose poetry. Known as a "poet of the people," today he conducts writing workshops with children and adults from coast to coast. He is the author of five books of poetry; A Place to Stand, a memoir; and several film scripts. His latest book is C-Train & Thirteen Mexicans (Grove Atlantic, October 2002).
