James Clyburn has served as both the U.S. representative for South Carolina’s 6th Congressional District since 1993 and the assistant democrat leader since 2011. He previously served as House majority whip from 2007 until 2011. As third highest-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, Congressman Clyburn’s prominent position in Washington has given him the opportunity to support the needs of America’s diverse communities by contributing to important policy decisions regarding higher education, health, labor and much more. A champion of the civil rights movement, Clyburn chronicles his journey from the Jim Crow-era South to Washington in his memoir, “Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black” (University of South Carolina Press).
