At the 2017 National Book Festival

The National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature of the Library of Congress and the Children’s Book Council, Kate DiCamillo is the recipient of the 2014 Newbery Medal for her novel “Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures.” This is DiCamillo’s second Newbery, which the American Library Association confers for the “most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.” DiCamillo also won the Newbery for “The Tale of Despereaux” in 2004. Her first published novel, “Because of Winn-Dixie,” won a Newbery Honor. She says of stories: “When we read together, we connect. Together, we see the world. Together, we see each other.” DiCamillo celebrates the 10th anniversary of her Mercy Watson series with “Mercy Watson: Something Wonky This Way Comes” (Candlewick). Her new book is “Francine Poulet Meets the Ghost Raccoon” (Candlewick), which is the second book in the Tales from Deckawoo Drive series—a spinoff from Mercy Watson.
