National Book Festival

A children’s book author and librarian from Maryland, Laura Amy Schlitz received the 2008 Newbery Medal for “Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village.” She also received a Newbery Honor in 2013 for “Splendors and Glooms.” Her other works include “The Night Fairy,” “The Bearskinner: A Tale of the Brothers Grimm,” “A Drowned Maiden's Hair” and “The Hero Schliemann: The Dreamer Who Dug for Troy.” Her latest novel, “The Hired Girl” (Candlewick), is the journal of 14-year-old Joan Skraggs, a hired cleaning and cooking girl in 1911 who seeks to create a better life for herself.
