Nathaniel Philbrick is a leading authority on the history of Nantucket, serves as the founding director of the Egan Institute of Maritime Studies and is a research fellow at the Nantucket Historical Society. He is the author of several books on sailing and the history of sailing, including the acclaimed international best-seller "In the Heart of the Sea "(2000), which won the 2000 National Book Foundation Award for Nonfiction, and "Sea of Glory" (2003), named a New York Times Notable Book for 2003. His latest book, "The" New York Times best-seller "Mayflower" (Penguin, 2006), is about the voyage of the Mayflower and the settlement of Plymouth Colony. Philbrick lives on Nantucket Island.
