Best-selling author Jeff Kinney, who appeared at the 2009 National Book Festival, explains the secret of his success.
“Write for adults”
From the early 1990s, when he attended the University of Maryland, Jeff Kinney knew he wanted to be a cartoonist. The campus paper ran his comic strip “Igdoof.” In 1998, he began to formulate ideas for “Diary of a Wimpy Kid.” He published daily installments of the “Diary” online before releasing it as a book, which became a New York Times best-seller. He followed that success with a series of “Diary” books.
