Genre/Form Headings for Cartographic Materials

In November 2008, the Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate (ABA) managers approved the Policy and Standards Divisions Timeline and Plan for the Next Five Library of Congress Genre/Form Projects. In accordance with that timeline, the Policy and Standards Division and the Geography and Maps Division of the Library of Congress are now in the initial stages of creating genre/form authority records (MARC tag 155) for cartographic materials.

The cartographic genre/form headings are based chiefly on concepts represented by existing LC subject headings (tag 150). Although the authority records are not yet approved, they may be consulted in the Library of Congress authorities database. The Policy Office is planning the first release of cartographic material genre/form authority records by mid-2009. As with other proposed headings, these sample records may not reflect the final forms, reference structures, etc., but are provided to assist in the development process:
