In May 2010 the Policy and Standards Division (PSD) approved approximately 60 genre/form terms for use with cartographic materials. LC catalogers have used those headings in new cataloging since September 1, 2010.
PSD and the Cooperative Programs Section of LC are together announcing that all SACO participants may now contribute proposals for new and revised genre/form terms in the area of cartography.
To propose new genre/form terms, SACO participants must use the online genre/form proposal form. For all other proposals, SACO participants should continue to use the subject proposal form; that form does not include the 155 tag, and cannot be used for genre/form terms. Both of the forms are linked to SACO’s web page.
Proposals to revise existing genre/form terms for cartographic materials should be sent to LC using the change proposal form.
Genre/form term proposals in the areas of moving images and radio programs have been accepted since February 2009. Genre/form proposals in areas other than moving images, radio programs, and cartography are not being accepted at this time. The Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT) is being developed in stages, according to a previously published timeline and plan.
Questions or comments about the projects may be sent to Janis L. Young, LC’s genre/form coordinator. Questions about PCC involvement in the genre/form projects may be directed to Paul Frank in the Cooperative Programs Section.
