Consideration and discussion of the variety of headings for battles have caused CPSO
to adopt a uniform practice for formulating these headings that will bring them in line with the
general guidelines for establishing phrase headings for events in H 1592 sec.4. Henceforth,
headings for battles will be established as event headings, using the form of name of the battle
found in the sources consulted. If a battle name appears in natural language form as "Battle of
[...]," "Battle of the [...]," or "Battles of [...], " the heading will be inverted to bring the
substantive portion of the name into the initial position. Appropriate jurisdictional geographic
qualifiers and dates will be added in accordance with the normal practice for events given in H
1592, sec.4.b. and sec.4.c.
For the next update to the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, which should be
available later this spring, the instruction sheet on battles, H 1285, will be revised to reflect this
change in policy.
As a project, CPSO will revise existing headings for battles that were established based on place
names in various forms: some without geographic qualifiers, others with place names in AACR1
form, and most with AACR2 parenthetical qualifiers.
