The UF reference CDOs on the proposed heading Collateralized debt obligations
was revised to UF CDOs (Collateralized debt obligations) because it is generally desirable to add
an explanatory parenthetical qualifier to an acronym or abbreviation used as a UF reference on
a subject heading (cf. H 373 sec. 6).
Social change Religious aspects Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.]; Islam and technology
Instruction sheet H 1998 sec. 5. c. states that in establishing headings to indicate
the religious aspects of an inherently non-religious topic, headings of the type [topic] Religious
aspects [religion or denomination] are preferred over headings of the type "[religion] and
[topic]." Therefore, the proposed heading "Islam and social change" was revised to the multiple
subdivision form Social change Religious aspects Buddhism, [Christianity, etc.] to authorize
the construction and assignment of the heading Social change Religious aspects Islam on a
free-floating basis.
Morrison's Haven (Scotland)
Generic designating terms like "Harbor" are added to parenthetical qualifiers on
geographic subject headings to break conflicts between two places of different types with the
same name in the same country (cf. H 810 sec. 2. b. (2)). They are generally not used merely
to provide an explanation of the type of geographic entity that the heading represents. Because
no evidence of a conflict on the name was cited or found, the proposed heading "Morrison's
Haven (Harbor : Scotland)," was revised to Morrison's Haven (Scotland). Had there been a
conflict requiring the addition of a designating term, that term would have been added following
the country name and a colon in the parenthetical qualifier. The first proposed UF reference was
also revised from Acheson's Haven (Harbor : Scotland) to Acheson's Haven (Scotland) because
no conflict was cited or found on this name. A conflict regarding the second proposed UF was
found. Because it involves a former village/fishing port/harbor, it was felt that the best method
of formulating a distinctive reference would be to include the lower level jurisdiction in the
qualifier: UF Newhaven (East Lothian, Scotland).
