Assigning corporate body headings for armed forces or units of the armed
forces.
The editorial meeting has approved a change in practice regarding the use of free-floating
subdivisions under military services listed in the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings,
H 1159.
In cases where a subdivision on that list is equivalent to a corporate body heading, a
heading with the subdivision should always be assigned, as well as an additional heading for the
corporate body if the work discusses the corporate or organizational aspects of the body. For
example, in Belgium the artillery is an organized unit represented by the corporate heading
Belgium. Armée. Artillerie. For works on the Belgian artillery, the heading Belgium.
Armée--Artillery should always be assigned. In addition, the corporate body heading Belgium.
Armée. Artillerie should be assigned if the work discusses the corporate or organizational
aspects.
In some cases, the corporate body heading may be valid only for certain time periods.
For example, Canada united all military services into one organization in 1968. Therefore the
corporate body heading Canada. Canadian Armed Forces may be used only for the post-1968
period and only for discussions of the corporate or organizational aspects of the Canadian armed
forces. However, all works on the Canadian armed forces discussed collectively should be
assigned the heading Canada--Armed Forces, regardless of the time period covered.
