Welcome to the LC Portals Applications Issues Group Web site
If you are starting out with little or no knowledge of federated search portals or OpenURL, click on Starting Out with Portals and OpenURL for a short introduction and recommended list of online readings.
The Webcast of a presentation by Roy Tennant on 09/15/2005 is now available on the LCPAIG: Documents Page. The title is Life Beyond MARC: the Case for Revolutionary Change in Library Systems and Services. Its run time is 65 minutes.
The Library of
Congress Portals Applications Issues Group (LCPAIG) started its work in mid-2002
and developed this Web site to organize information
about federated search and academic portals and OpenURL resolver products and to share this information with LC staff and the library
community. This Web site also organizes links to other Web sites on portals and OpenURL resolvers found in current literature, projects, initiatives and resources from library organizations and professional standards groups and meetings.
Links to Webcasts, slides of presentations, and other resources as well as documents issued by LCPAIG are found in LCPAIG: Documents; goals and tasks of LCPAIG may be found in LCPAIG: Goals; and a list of the Library of Congress staff serving on the Portals Applications Issues Group is in LCPAIG: Members.
Links to a list of portal and OpenURL resolver products and the vendors and organizations which supply them are presented in several categories: Federated Search Portal Products/Vendors, which includes portals that emphasize federated search characteristics along with a host of other features, OpenURL Resolver Products/Vendors and Academic Portal Products/Vendors, which include portals used by academic and educational institutions to organize and present institutional information and courses. A selection of Federal government agency and academic institution Web portals and subject "gateways" which fit into a related category of portals are linked under the menu item, Examples. Enterprise portal products and search engines are generally excluded from these lists, since they were not within the scope of LCPAIG's study.
