Note on scope: This will include name, uniform title/series, and subject authorities.
1. Draft charge for the Task Group:
The task group will investigate existing techniques for linking bibliographic
and authority records within respective systems, evaluate the efficacy of these
techniques for validation and global updates, and propose a minimum set of
functional capabilities that should exist in any system. These capabilities
will include the effect on operations in a local institution, within and among
the bibliographic utilities and in vendors' authority services.
The task group will consider the implications of intra-system linkages
(local) and inter-system linkages (universal) and the suitability of USMARC
formats for supporting and communicating linking information in a distributed
environment.
2. Proposed outcomes:
A functional description of the relationship of authority records
to the headings in bibliographic records in the creation and maintenance of
bibliographic records.
A survey of the current state-of-technology.
Requirements for future development and/or suggestions for research
topics.
3. Duration: 6 months
Fime frame: Final report forthcoming
