Warm up discussion: PCC libraries and metadata
BIBCO/CONSER representatives:
Please be prepared to answer the following questions by a show of hands or discussion
at the beginning of the CONSER/BIBCO meeting on May 3rd. Discuss the questions
ahead
of time with others in your institution, as needed.
For purposes of this discussion, "metadata" refers to cataloging codes, lists
of data elements, or other schema that are used to create records or data that
enhances the retrieval and interpretation of bibliographic resources in digital
form.
- Is your institution using metadata other than AACR2?
(Yes or no)
- If yes, what types of materials and what metadata are being used for them?
- What kinds of staff are involved with metadata applications or creating
records for digital resources? (E.g., catalogers, reference librarians, etc.)
- Who is currently cataloging electronic integrating resources (databases,
Web sites) in your library (e.g., serials catalogers, monograph catalogers,
electronic resources catalogers)?
- Now that AACR2 has been revised, when do you think we'll use AACR2 for
resources such as Web sites and databases? E-journals? Other digital resources?
- In broad terms, how can the PCC promote the cataloging of digital materials
of all types? Is there a place for non-MARC/AACR2 metadata in PCC?
