Cartographic Materials Core Record Task Group

Charge:

The Cartographic Materials Core Record Task Group is charged with the following goals:

  1. Define the minimum set of data elements for cartographic materials (i.e., the entities corresponding to those within the scope of Chapter 3 of AACR2) that will serve to streamline the cataloging of such materials and still meet the most basic needs of a wide range of cooperative institutions.
  2. Use as a starting point the definition of the core record for books and determine which, if any, additional data elements specific to cartographic materials should be added and which, if any, data elements defined for books are not needed for cartographic materials.
  3. Summarize the rationale for such additions or deletions when it is believed that they may not be readily understood by the wider cataloging community or if they are potentially controversial.
  4. Include any supporting recommendations in an explicit form and identify any standards bodies external to the PCC Executive Council to whom they should be referred (e.g., MARBI, CC:DA, etc.)

Timeline:
Final report:
The final report will be due by June 1, 2001. It should summarize the Task Group's conclusions and should be no more than five pages in length. It should clearly delineate the data elements to be included in the cartographic materials core record standard in the format adopted for previous core record standards as they are currently presented on the PCC home page. Supporting discussion, implementation, recommendations, and other recommendations should be attached separately and should be presented in bullet form.

Process: As has been the case for past Task Groups, your group should conduct as much business as possible via e-mail, conference calls, etc. You may wish to utilize the ALA Midwinter Meeting to provide a meeting for your group. You are encouraged to produce interim reports, lists of ideas or strategies for comment or otherwise inform and invite the participation of the cataloging community via listservs, ALA committees, etc.
