Guidelines for evaluation of Core Records

Model B: Information that should be included when reporting impact of Core Level Cataloging on Copy Cataloging

  1. TYPE OF LIBRARY
    • Public
    • College
    • University
    • Special
  2. IDENTIFY LEVELS OF CATALOGING COMPARED
    • Core level and full level
    • Core level and minimal level
    • Core level, minimal level and full level
    • No comparison; analysis of copy cataloging with core records alone
  3. IDENTIFY SOURCE OF CORE RECORDS EVALUATED
    • Core level = BIBCO/DLC core level only
    • Core level = non-BIBCO/DLC core level only
    • Core level + BIBCO/DLC & non-BIBCO core level records
  4. IDENTIFY SOURCE OF FULL OR MINIMAL LEVEL COPY USED FOR BASELINE COMPARISON
    • Full level/minimal level = DLC copy only
    • Full level/minimal level = non-DLC copy only
    • Full level/minimal level = DLC and non-DLC copy
  5. DESCRIBE LEVEL OF AUTHORITY WORK COMPLETED IN LEVELS OF CATALOGING COMPARED
    • No authority work, accept heading as found
    • Local authority work only
    • Full NACO
      • Number of headings created for all cataloging levels compared
    • Full SACO
      • Number of headings proposed for all cataloging levels compared
  6. DESCRIBE THE SAMPLE FOR EACH LEVEL OF CATALOGING COMPARED
    • Sample size (number of titles)
    • Format(s)
    • Subject area(s)
    • Language(s)
    • Library's classification scheme(s)
    • Span of imprint dates
  7. DESCRIBE THE UNIT OF MEASURE TO BE USED IN THE COMPARISON*
    • Overall productivity over a specified period of time
    • Production rate per individual cataloger over duration of experiment
    • Average productivity per cataloger over a specified period of time
    • Number of records requiring modification for local use
    • Extent of modification
    • Cost per item processed
  8. DESCRIBE THE METHODOLOGY OF THE COMPARISON
    • Staffing**
    • Number of staff involved
    • Level of staff
    • Years of experience of participating catalogers
    • Duration of experiment
    • Collecting/reporting of data
    • Which components of task are separately timed?
    • Searching for copy
    • Editing copy ***
    • Authority work
    • Classification
    • Shelf listing
    • Data collection
    • Revision
    • Other
    • How are they timed/measured?
    • Other special conditions/activities/controls?

* Apply measurement equally to both core and comparison level(s) and describe all components which are used to derive the measurement. For example, if the comparison is expressed as a cost number, are benefits included in the calculation of staff costs?

** In order to be meaningful, number, level and years of staff might be best expressed as a matrix which clarifies the inter-relationships between these data. If a matrix is not used, it is important that these inter-relationships be explicitly described in some way.

*** Attach a list of editing guidelines or, if possible, summarize editing practices so that the requirements for editing copy are clearly delineated.
