NACO Name Authority Institute
The Program for Cooperative Cataloging periodically presents a 5-day Name Authority Institute for NACO libraries at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. with instructors including senior cataloging specialists at the Library of Congress.*
Prerequisites:
The Institute is open to new and existing NACO member libraries. Your institution should fill out a NACO membership form before subscribing for the course. Please read requirements and parameters of joining NACO.
Course summary:
This course will focus on the relevant chapters of AACR2, the Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, the MARC21 Authority Format, and searching techniques for name authorities. Please check the course outline.
Prior to the workshop attendees will be required to prepare for the institute by reviewing the appropriate AACR2, LCRIs, Z-1 (DCM), and MARC 21 guidelines listed on the NACO home page. Participants are encouraged to bring in surrogate headings to discuss in class.
Photocopies of prominent sources from items in your collection (for example: t.p., t.p. verso, cover, p. 1-4, and spine as appropriate for new formats).
Each participant is expected to bring a training manual to the class.
Registered attendees will gain access to the electronic files prior to the commencement of the workshop.
At the end of the course, participants will undergo review until they reach independence for contributing name authority records to the Library of Congress/NACO Authority File. Institutions with
previous graduates of the Name Authority Institute are expected to perform review for the new trainees they send. In addition, NACO Institute participant graduates are encouraged to train colleagues in their home institutions to contribute NARs.
Schedule:
Classes held at the Library of Congress are usually planned on a Monday-Friday schedule. Sessions run all day starting at 8:45 A.M.-4 P.M., Monday through Friday, with a possible shortened day on Friday. Participants coming from a distance will need to arrive the day before.
Costs and housing:
There is no charge for the course itself, but participants will be responsible for their own transportation, housing, and meals. No announcements will be sent about reservations in a specific
hotel. The Cooperative Programs Section advise attendees to inquire at the property which they choose if the U.S. government rate is honored, and remind participants that they are to make their own reservations. However, the Holiday Inn Washington Capitol, 550 C Street, S.W., Washington, D.C., 202.479.4000, has reserved rooms for participants should they choose to select this property.
Participants are free to research and reserve housing at hotels, inns, or B&Bs as desired and may contact the COOP Team for more information.
ADA accommodations:
Library of Congress programs comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. If accommodations are needed, please include pertinent information when responding to the NACO Institute invitation.
Registration:
Dates for the Name Authority Institute appear on the PCC
calendar. Submitting a registration form does not guarantee participation in the course. The course coordinator will acknowledge your registration form upon receipt and will send a confirmation notice by Aug. 10, 2009.
