SUBJECT HEADINGS

Authorship in old age

Headings of the type [ ... ] in old age have been established only for diseases or psychological topics or conditions in old age, not for general activities. The existing heading Older authors appears to cover the same topic as the proposed heading and may be used instead. The proposal was not approved.

Border Region (Ireland); Ireland, Mid-East; and related proposals

The terminology used in these proposals to establish headings for the regions of Ireland appears to be based on region names that have been officially adopted by an office of the European Union for administrative and statistical purposes. If the library that made the proposals wishes to establish headings for these officially designated regions, all of the headings should be established as uninverted proper names, e.g. Mid-East Region (Ireland), South-West Region (Ireland), etc., and the scope note for each heading should describe it as a region that has been officially designated for statistical purposes. If, on the other hand, more general headings are needed for the geographic regions of Ireland, as described in the Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings, H 760, sec. 1.e.(6), the headings may be established in inverted form but the qualifiers should be more generic adjectives such as Southwestern, Southeastern, etc., and should reflect the consensus of terminology that is used in general geographic sources. The proposed headings should be reformulated according to these principles and may be resubmitted.
