SUMMARY OF DECISIONS, EDITORIAL MEETING NUMBER 6

February 11, 2009

Present from PSD: P. Weiss, K. Griffiths, D. Thompson, E. Dechman, J. Young

CLASSIFICATION

LF4425.S252

This institution appears to be a military technical university. As such, it would be better classed in U604. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Subdivisions to be added to lists of free-floating subdivisions:

H 1147, Animals

$x Quarantine (May Subd Geog)

Other decisions:

Latin America--Discovery and exploration--Prohibited books

Rather than pre-coordinating these topics in a single subject heading string, the meeting felt that it is preferable to assign two separate headings to bring out the two topics. The proposal was not approved.

Left-wing extremism; Right-wing extremism

These topics are currently handled by doubling the existing heading Radicalism with either Left-wing extremists or Right-wing extremists, as appropriate. Other related headings that are available for use include Right and left (Political science), New Left, and Religious right. The meeting felt that the existing array of headings is sufficient and that there is no need to create two additional new headings. The proposals were therefore not approved.

Neural networks (Neurobiology)

Since not all neural networks are in the brain, it does not seem appropriate to add the UF Neural networks in the brain to this heading. Works that are specifically about neural networks in the brain would be assigned multiple headings. The proposal was not approved.

Urban design

The term Urban design is currently a UF reference for the heading City planning. If it were established as a separate heading, there are hundreds of existing bibliographic records that would have to be individually evaluated to determine whether the assigned heading City planning should be changed to the new heading Urban design. The distinction between the two headings is too fine to be practical for cataloging purposes and is likely to lead to inconsistent assignment of the two headings. The proposal to establish Urban design as a separate heading was therefore not approved.
