SUMMARY OF DECISIONS, EDITORIAL MEETING NUMBER 30

July 29, 2009

PSD policy specialist responsible for this weekly list: P. Weiss

CLASSIFICATION

HD9502.5.W38-.W384

Works about water power class in either TC415+ or HD1693+, as appropriate. The proposal was not approved.

PJ7519.H87

A number for humor in Arabic literature has already been provided at PJ7578. The proposal was not approved.

SUBJECT HEADINGS

Assateague Island National Seashore (Md. and Va.); Fire Island National Seashore (N.Y.); Point Reyes National Seashore (Calif.)

Headings that designate a type of geographic feature, such as Seashore, are not used as broader terms for headings for national parks. The proposals to add Seashore--[place] as a broader terms for these headings were not approved. The authority record for the existing heading Padre Island National Seashore (Tex.) will be corrected to remove the BT Seashore--Texas.

Birthdate effect

This term is used in various fields, with a unique meaning in each field. Even within the field of education, the term seems to have different meanings in different contexts. An appropriate qualifier needs to be added to the heading to make it more specific, and a scope note should be provided to explain its intended meaning. In addition, since the form "birth date effect" seems to be in more common use than "birthdate effect," the heading should be changed to that form when the proposal is resubmitted.

Las Vegas Grant (N.M.)

GNIS identifies this entity as "a political division formed for administrative purposes." As such, it should be established as a name heading. The proposal to establish it as a subject heading was not approved.

Netherlands Antilles fiction (Dutch)--20th century; Netherlands Antilles fiction (English)--20th century; Netherlands Antilles fiction (Spanish)--20th century

Period subdivisions are not used under headings for literary genres that are modified by a parenthetical qualifier designating a language (see the Subject Headings Manual, H 1156, sec. I). The proposals were not approved.

Netherlands Antilles fiction (Papiamento); Netherlands Antilles fiction (Papiamento)--20th century; Netherlands Antilles literature (Papiamento)

These headings were not approved because they are covered by the existing headings Papiamento fiction and Papiamento literature.
