Notes of SCS meeting at ALA Midwinter

Meeting, January 25, 2003
Philadelphia, PA
American Library Association Midwinter Meeting
9-11 AM Philadelphia Marriott

Present: Ann Caldwell, Chair (Brown Univ.); Tatiana Barr (Univ. of Florida), Kay Guiles (LC), Ed Glazier (RLG), Ann Sitkin (Harvard Univ. Law Library), Dajin Sun (Yale Univ.), Jay Weitz (OCLC), John Wright (Brigham Young Univ.) Absent: Paul Weiss (UCSD)

1. Updates:

Ann C. gave a brief update on the November Policy Committee meeting. There is an interest in forming a task group to look at E-books in aggregators. While this group will probably not get into the depth that the SCA group did so far as loading, etc., it will look at bibliographic elements, etc. Suggestions for possible membership are welcome.

Action: Tatiana and Ann will draft a charge in the coming weeks.

There was a discussion on item 2.1.1 in the Strategic Plan concerning a core record FAQ. In the past FAQs have come from LC with input from standing committees.

Action: Ann will contact Ana Cristan to request clarification on this item.

2. New Business

a. Task Group on the Function of the Authority File

SCS agreed that the Task Group has delivered an excellent report and will honor their request for a short extension to wrap up loose ends. Comments were made on several specific points but further comments will be delayed until the final report is delivered.

Action: Ann will contact Manon Theroux to confirm that an April 1, 2003 extension is acceptable.

b. Task Group on Conference Proceedings

SCS accepted the report of the Task Group and agreed that it had met its charge. It will be posted on the web and committee members will continue discussing the recommendations made by the group.

Action: Ann will initiate e-mail discussion of the recommendations

c. Core Records

The group discussed acceptance of "non-standard" core records in the program, specifically archival records cataloged using codes other than AACR2. There was agreement that Encoding level 4 could be used but that these records should not have the 042 "PCC" input.

Action: Ann will notify the Policy Committee and the institution of SCS's decision
