Accomplishments
Core Record Standards
- Core record for collections was completed and posted on the PCC web site.
- Supplementary core for multiple character sets was completed and posted
on the PCC web site.
- Cartographic Materials Core Record Task Group was appointed. (see below)
- Core record standardization: Significant progress has been made into standardizing
the terminology and formatting used in the core standards. A regular review
cycle and procedures have also been drafted. This project is scheduled for
completion during the coming year.
Cross Reference Task Group Final Report
The final report of the Cross Reference Task Group was accepted by SCS in
January and posted on the PCC homepage for comment. SCS has completed its review
of the report and has submitted its recommendations to
Policy Committee for further action at its November meeting.
AV Task Force Recommendations
As part of the final report made by the task group assigned with developing
core standards for AV materials, there was a list of recommendations that the
group made requiring action on the part of SCS. These recommendations were
lost during the merger of BIBCO and CONSER. During the past year, SCS appointed
a small task force (Ann Caldwell (Chair), Diane
Boehr, Cathy Gerhart, Jane D. Johnson, Kathy Winzer) which studied the original
recommendations and proposed appropriate actions for each one. SCS has completed
its review of the task force's work and has forwarded its recommendations to
PoCo for further action at its November meeting.
Data Gathering Model C (to gather data for evaluation
of patron usage of core records)
A task force (Karen Letarte (Chair), Ann Caldwell, Shirley Lincicum, Christina
Tarr) has been formed to investigate the feasibility of fully developing this
data gathering model. Their charge along with an interim
report with goals for August-December may be found on the PCC web site.
It should be noted that since the interim report was written, the study planned
by Letarte has been put on hold until summer of 2001 due to lack of funding.
At the PCC Membership Meeting, ALA Midwinter (Jan. 2000) in San Antonio Schuitema
spoke on the role of SCS and the fluidity of standards during a special focus
on SCS during this meeting.
SCS Task Forces/Groups currently working:
PCC Task Force on Multiple Manifestations of Electronic
Resources
After the May 2000 meeting of the BIBCO and CONSER Operations Committees,
it was decided that a task group, comprised of BIBCO and CONSER members and
reporting to SCS, be formed to 1) identify the most common types of versions
and reproductions for textual resources currently available; 2) recommend the
best practices for each; 3) define principles by which determinations about
whether to create single or separate records for versions and reproductions
can be made in order to facilitate future decisions when new types of versions
are published. John Riemer (UCLA) chairs this 15-member task force. An interim
report is due to SCS by ALA Midwinter. The final report is due to SCS by April
15th for discussion at the annual BIBCO/CONSER Operations Committee meeting
(May 3-4). The full charge and roster may be found on the PCC web site.
042 Task Group
This newly appointed group, chaired by Jennifer Bowen (Eastman School of
Music), is charged with exploring the usefulness of developing a code for inclusion
in the 042 field of a bibliographic record which would indicate that access
points for names on pre-AACR2 records have been evaluated and established to
current rules and which are represented by records in the national authority
file. Other members of the group include Jain Fletcher (UCLA), Kate Harcourt
(Columbia), and Chris Mueller (Univ. of New Mexico). An interim
report is due to SCS by October 15. The final report will be delivered
to SCS by Feb. 15, 2001 pending discussion at ALA Midwinter. The full charge
and roster may be found on the PCC web site.
Model C Task Force
See comments above. The full charge, roster, and an interim
report may be found on the PCC web site.
Cartographic Materials Core Record Task Group
This task group, chaired by Paige Andrew (Penn. State) is charged with defining
the minimum set of data elements for cartographic materials (i.e., the entities
corresponding to those within the scope of Chpt. 3 of AACR2) that will serve
to streamline the cataloging of such materials and still meet the most basic
needs of a wide range of cooperative institutions. Other members include Nancy
Kandoian (NYPL), Rebecca Lubas (MIT), Mary Larsgaard (Univ. of California,
Santa Barbara), Nancy H. Holcomb (Cornell), and Barbara J. Story (LC). The
full charge and roster will soon be available on the PCC web site. The group
has just begun its work. The final report is due to SCS by June 1, 2001.
