Standing Committee on Standards Annual Report 2002

FY 2002

The committee has focussed its efforts this year on the core record harmonization. This project has turned out to be much more difficult and involved than first imagined. What follows is a summary of the major changes that have been made to the core records and the introduction(s):

  • Core record for cartographic materials added
  • Footnotes examined for discrepancies in wording and, when necessary, changed
  • Total number of footnotes reduced as a result of this above step
  • MARC field 856 added to all core records, where appropriate
  • Composite chart of all core record developed to facilitate comparison among the cores (individual core records will be retained)
  • Values "M" (mandatory) and "MA" (mandatory if applicable) examined between the cores for discrepancies
  • Individual introductions to the core records eliminated in favor of a single introduction

Special thanks go to Ed Glazier who has been doing the bulk of the editorial work on this project. In addition, Kay Guiles' expert analytic and proofreading skills have been invaluable. The final deadline for comments and corrections is Friday, September 20, 2002.

As mentioned above, a core record for Cartographic Materials was added to the suite of core records during this year. As noted in an earlier quarterly report, this core record was accepted only after several rounds of revisions. Many thanks to Paige Andrews and his task group for putting this together.

In response to an inquiry from a BIBCO participant, the Committee prepared text to be added to the Classification FAQ concerning "bound withs". It also modified the wording of the existing text in that FAQ concerning series treatment.

The Committee also prepared wording for the FAQ on uniform titles.

A full record standard was prepared and has been added to the BIBCO training manual. Unlike the core record standards, this standard is a statement of requirements for a full record rather than a listing of required fields.

The Task Force on the Function of the Authority File requested an extension for its final report due to the chair's participation in local system implementation. The final report from the Task Force on Conference Proceedings will be received shortly.

Finally, Linda Barnhart (UCSD) asked to be allowed to step down from the committee due to work responsibilities. Paul Weiss, also of UCSD, has agreed to join the committee for a three-year term.
