PCC Standing Committee on Training
Notes from the SCT Meeting
held at ALA Annual
Saturday, June 26, 2004
9:30 - 11:30 am -OCLC Red Suite, Rosen Plaza Hotel
Present: David Banush (Chair), Ana Cristan, Glenn Patton, Frieda Rosenberg,
Rebecca Uhl, Rachel Wadham. Guests: Roxanne Selberg, Carolyn Sturtevant.
Updates from the chair
SACO program study and formalization has been completed. Mentors for non-PCC
libraries will be made available to help them with proposals. BIBCO coordinators
as well as NACO and BIBCO trainers will be asked to fill this role.
Update on joint PCC/ALCTS Training initiatives:
It was announced that the CCS and the PCC has set up a committee to oversee
the maintenance and distribution of the jointly prepared training courses.
Membership includes: David, Ana, and Lori Robare.
The subject analysis course was presented as a pre-conference on June 24 and
25. There were 84 people in attendance. Ana brought the trainees manual for
everyone to look at. The training was well received and many people have been
asking about how they can present the training at their own institutions. The
name authorities course is well under way. The first module will be presented
on Monday June 28th. CCS has made overtures to develop a series training course
and an LC classification course. Discussion on this issue include if existing
training materials could be used for series training and if so how this could
speed up the timeline that has been followed for the other two courses. The
need to get other input and start from scratch was discussed in relation to
the other issues of the series training. It was suggested that existing members
of the name authorities task group could be used to develop series training
(some have already expressed interest and this would help speed up the timeline.)
Issues relating to the LC classification course were also discussed, such all
schedules could be covered or which schedules would be representative enough
to use in training. Both the series training and LC classification training
will be pursued and issued discussed with the CCS.
[After ALA, David contacted Jennifer Bowen and Sara Shatford Layne, outgoing
and incoming chairs of the CCS Executive Committee, as well as the PCC Policy
Committee, to gauge their interest in pursuing these two courses. He also spoke
with Judy Kuhagen of LC, whose expertise on series authorities is widely acknowledged;
she agreed to participate in developing training materials on series authorities
if the initiative moves forward.]
Update on ALCTS Continuing Education Implementation Group
Due to illness, Greta was unable to attend ALA, so this item was not discussed.
She did report briefly in an email message to the group.
Discussion of Steering Committee Response to TG on International Participation
Report
The SCT discussed the responses relating specifically training from the report
of the TG on International Participation. Some items are already under way
(e.g., Action Item 2, to develop training materials devoid of commitment to
the PCC; the subject training and name authorities training developed with
ALCTS fill this need.) Discussion of the need to clarify current program structural
realities and requirements (Action Item 1) was discussed. It is important that
the requirements be stated in all promotional literature and in training materials
as well. It was made clear that the PCC accepts certain standards and rules
(AACR2, LCRIs) that that international partners need to work under these guidelines
(Action item 3). Recommendation 7 which relates to online training tools was
discussed. The need for such tools was recognized and Rachel volunteered to
head a Task Group to develop such materials. David and Rachel will draft a
charge. The group also talked about recommendation 5 (documentation in other
languages) and how we could make that happen.
Discussion of final report of Metadata Training TG
After a long time, with many pitfalls and problems, the final report of the
Metadata Training TG was received. The report seemed vague and it was uncertain
if the task group had really addressed their entire charge. The value of the
recommendation to perform a survey was discussed. Possible responses to the
TG were outlined, including reforming the group, stating that the group was
unable to fulfill its charge and disband it without further inquiry were discussed.
David will make a decision and formulate a response for the group. [Subsequently,
submitted to the PoCo for their consideration and posted to the SCT
web page in July]
IR training and documentation update
A new task group consisting of BIBCO representatives, CONSER representatives,
and Judy Kuhagen from CPSO are updating the Integrating Resources manuals and
training materials. The updates reflect new rule updates as well as suggestions
from trainers and catalogers who have now had enough time to work with the
materials. The updates should be complete later this fall.
BIBCO Training Manual feedback
The three editors (Becky, Rebecca Malek-Wiley and Iris Wolley) of the BIBCO
Training Manual are working on the revisions. Drafts of certain sections were
distributed for comments. The exercises were not distributed at this time,
since there would not be time in this meeting to discuss them. They will be
sent at a later date in the hopes of getting detailed responses to them. Becky
directed discussion of distributed portions. Some questions noted on the slides
have already been answered. Discussion included a statement on the principles
and concepts as requested by the task group on international participation.
Discussion on the length and accuracy of the history section, and some additional
points ensued. Other editorial comments to the group are welcome and can be
sent to Rebecca Malek-Wiley at rrmw14@earthlink.net.
Outgoing members
David thanked Frieda Rosenberg and Adam Schiff, who are rotating off of the
committee, and requested that any ideas for new members as well as ideas for
future chairs be given to him.
