Annual Report of the Standing Committee on Training
September 12, 2002
The Standing Committee on Training (SCT) continues to work to identify the
need for training programs, workshops, and institutes aimed at developing cataloging
skills that support the Program goals for both new participants and for continuing
education and to identify, develop as necessary, and promote the distribution
of easy-to-use documentation in support of Program goals.
Outgoing members of the Standing Committee on Training are: Carol Hixson (Outgoing
Chair), Cecilia Botero, Valerie Bross, and Jerry Saye. Continuing members include:
David Banush (Incoming Chair), Bill Garrison, Louise Rees, Frieda Rosenberg,
Heather Rosie, Adam Schiff. Liaisons include: Ed Glazier, RLG Liaison, Glenn
Patton, OCLC Liaison, and Ana Cristán, BIBCO Liaison. Banush, Rosenberg,
Rosie, and Schiff were appointed in fiscal year 2001/2002.
BIBCO Participants' Manual
With the assistance of the BIBCO Operations Committee, individual BIBCO catalogers,
and numerous staff at the Library of Congress, the BIBCO Participants' Manual
was completed this year and delivered in August 2002 to CDS for distribution.
It is available on the Web at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/bibco/bpm.pdf.
A new section on the cataloging of Integrating Resources is being prepared
by Diane Boehr and Alice Jacobs of NLM and should be available by summer 2003.
This document will be included in the CONSER and BIBCO Manuals
and may also be made available as a stand-alone document.
Full and Core Standards
The SCT requested a review of Core standards and an articulation of Full standards
from the Standing Committee on Standards (SCS). As drafts were made available,
SCT members provided feedback and later endorsed the standards developed by
the SCS.
Integrating Resources
Working closely with the BIBCO and CONSER coordinators, the Standing Committee
on Training and the Standing Committee on Standards commissioned Steven Miller
(University of Wisconsin) to develop a workshop on integrating resources for
the BIBCO/CONSER Operations Committee meeting in May, 2002. The workshop was
well-received and more in-depth training has been developed for an SCCTP course.
The presentation is available on the BIBCO Web site.
SCT/SAC Training Effort
The SCT/SAC effort to develop training materials on the use of Library of
Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) continues. Most of the course content has
been developed in draft form. The PCC Steering Committee and the Executive
Director of ALCTS have begun to discuss the archiving and ownership of the
content of the training materials. Both groups agreed, in principle, to sharing
the ownership and distribution of the content and must now work out the details.
Continuing Education Efforts
Hixson and CONSER Coordinator Jean Hirons co-authored a white paper in November
2001 on
the PCC Role in Continuing Education for Catalogers, available on the Web site
at:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/whitepapertrng.html
Arising from the SCT's involvement in continuing education, Hixson is chairing
an ALCTS Task Force on Continuing Education for Catalogers (LC Action Plan
Item 5.3) She will continue to report on the progress of this effort to the
SCT through reports to incoming Chair, David Banush, as well as by making information
available on the group's Web site http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~chixson/cetf/CETFHome.html.
International Efforts
The appointment of Heather Rosie of the British Library to the SCT in May
2002 will facilitate the exploration of issues of importance to the PCC's international
membership. Under the new Chair's leadership, potential obstacles to effective
international participation will be explored and training targeted to address
those concerns.
Respectfully submitted, Carol Hixson Chair, Standing Committee on Training
