Annual Report of the Standing Committee on Training
September 12, 2005
The Standing Committee on Training (SCT) continues to identify the need
for training programs, workshops, and institutes aimed at developing
cataloging skills that support the Program goals. The training efforts
undertaken are intended to serve both new program participants and to reach
those currently participating in one or more PCC component programs or those
who may need to refresh or further their knowledge of contemporary
bibliographic control practices. The committee has been especially active
in reaching out to non-PCC participants in recent years.
Outgoing members of the Standing Committee on Training are David Banush,
Ana Cristán, and Heather Rosie. Caroline Miller (UCLA) will succeed David
as chair of the committee on October 1, 2005. Steven Arakawa, Greta de
Groat, Becky Uhl, and Rachel Wadham continue as members. Liaisons include:
Ed Glazier, RLG Liaison, Glenn Patton, OCLC Liaison, and Carolyn Sturtevant,
BIBCO Liaison.
ALCTS/PCC Joint Training Efforts
The joint ALCTS/PCC Task Force to Develop Name and Title Authority
Training successfully offered its full workshop as a pre-conference to the
Chicago ALA Annual Meeting in June 2005. Enrollment was high, as was
enthusiasm. In September 2005, trainers for the course will be trained at
LC; the course will then be available regionally.
The ALCTS/PCC Task Force to Develop Series Training and the PCC SCT/CCS
SAC Task Force on Library of Congress Classification Training were formed
late in 2004 and are in the midst of preparing their courses. Their work
will be completed over the next year. Initial reports from the groups are
due in Fall 2005.
Integrating Resources Manual Revised
The SCT formed an ad-hoc group to review the integrating resources
cataloging documentation. Judy Kuhagen of LC served as chair. The group
incorporated the changes to AACR2 and the LCRIs that affected treatment of
these resources as well as the suggestions from users of the documentation
for its improvement. The thoroughly updated documents were issued early
in 2005. The manual
will remain an appendix to the BIBCO Participants’ Manual, and also be
a module in the CONSER documentation.
BIBCO Training Manual
The editorial team of Rebecca Malek-Wiley, Becky Uhl, and Iris Wolley
completed their work last fall, and the revised BIBCO Training Manual has
been available since late 2004.
NACO Participants' Manual
The third edition of the NACO Participants’ Manual appeared in summer 2005.
Several members, past and present, of the SCT had offered comments, added
examples, and revised the text of the manuscript before it was turned over
to the Coop Team for completion.
SACO Participants' Manual
At the SCT meeting in January, members agreed that the SACO Participants’
Manual was in need of updating. The SCT chair subsequently formed a new TG
to revise that manual; the work should be completed by Fall 2005. John
Mitchell and Adam Schiff are chairing the group.
Joint PCC/CCS Committee on Continuing Education Training Materials
The SCT chair is a member of this group, charged with keeping
jointly-developed ALCTS/PCC training materials accurate and up to date.
The group received the recommendations of a task force to review the LCSH
workshop documentation.
The committee also accepted a proposal from Marty Kurth, chair of the LC
Action Plan Continuing Ed Implementation Group, to have the committee
assume responsibility for the maintenance of the five courses being
developed under LC Action Plan item 5.3, the so-called “Cat 21” courses.
The proposal has been accepted by the PoCo and by the ALCTS CCS Executive
Committee. The committee’s charge was revised slightly to accommodate the
change.
Task Group on Online Training
Chaired by Rachel Wadham, this Task Group’s initial report is due in Fall
2005. The group is working on Phase I of its charge, available for
review
online.
SCT liaison to PoCo Task Group on Bibliographic Control for Web resources
The PCC Policy Committee asked SCT for a representative to work on a new
group that will examine the viability of different levels of bibliographic
control for Web resources. Greta DeGroat has graciously agreed to
represent the Committee on this group.
The chair is especially grateful to committee members, the PoCo and
Steering Committee, and other PCC librarians who have served so well on the
groups’ various task forces and subcommittees. The success of the SCT is
due to their hard work and generous support.
Respectfully submitted,
David Banush
