Ongoing Projects

Joint PCC SCT/CCS SAC Task Force on Library of Congress Classification Training

The Joint PCC SCT/CCS SAC Task Force on Library of Congress Classification presented its teaser module 2-hour session at ALA Annual in New Orleans on June 25, 2006. The title was Understanding LC Classification: a Preview of an ALCTS/PCC Workshop. The program included an overview of the full course outline, a run-through of the session on Notation and Cuttering, and a description of the Cooperative Cataloging Training Program, with information on how to host a workshop. The program was well attended and the subcommittee received valuable feedback from attendees, including many ideas about what to include in a session on Local Decisions.

The group also met twice at ALA Annual to further develop modules for the complete course to be presented as a pre-conference at ALA Annual in Washington, DC in 2007. Train-The-Trainer (TTT) sessions are expected to take place in fall 2007. Course materials are due to arrive at CDS by March 1, 2007.

TF members:

PCC membership: Steven Arakawa (Yale University), Paul Frank (Library of Congress), Caroline Miller (UCLA), Rebecca Uhl (Arizona State University)

CCS/SAC membership: Lori Robare (University of Oregon), Chair, Lynda Aldana (Johns Hopkins University), Lois Mai Chan (University of Kentucky), Daniel Lovins (Yale University), Mark McKnight (University of North Texas), Scott Opasik (Indiana University, South Bend), Bruce Trumble (Harvard University)

Joint PCC/CCS Task Force to Develop Series Training

Following LC’s April 20, 2006 decision to stop creating and following series authority records (LC Series Treatment Decision), there was initially a question of whether the work of this task force should continue. Both ALCTS ( ALCTS issues statement on the Library of Congress series authority record decision ) and the PCC Series Statement have since issued statements that support the continuation of series authority work so the work of the Joint PCC/CCS Task Force to Develop Series Training is continuing as planned.

The Joint PCC/CCS Task Force to Develop Series Training presented its teaser module 2-hour session at ALA Annual in New Orleans on June 24, 2006. The teaser module was Introduction to Series in the Bibliographic Record. Attendees learned the intricacies of the relationship between the bibliographic record and series authority records. Discussions included how to transcribe series into the bibliographic record and how MARC21 series fields are used. The teaser session was well received and many comments will make the training better. The fully completed materials will be presented at a two day preconference at ALA Annual in 2007 in Washington, D.C. The Instructor Development Seminar (IDS) sessions are expected to take place on October 30 and 31, 2007 immediately preceding the PCC Policy Committee meeting on November 1 and 2, 2007. Course materials are due to arrive at CDS by March 1, 2007.

ALCTS Continuing Education Implementation Group

Greta de Groat has served as the PCC SCT liaison to the ALCTS Continuing Education Implementation Group (CEIG). This group is focusing on course development for the series of five courses in the Cataloging for the 21st Century program:

CEIG activities from July 2006 to date follow.

  1. Course 2 (Metadata Standards and Applications) was given July 24-25 in Chicago, and the IDS followed on July 26. We now have a full compliment of trainers for this course. Based on feedback from attendees, a revised version was submitted by course developer Diane Hillmann to CEIG for final approval. This updated version was given on September 19-20 in Atlanta.
  2. A second offering of CE Course 3 (Principles of Controlled Vocabulary and Thesaurus Design) plus a second IDS is scheduled for September 12-14 in Atlanta.
  3. First offering of CE Course 4 (Metadata and Digital Library Development) was given in Washington, DC on July 17 and 18, with the IDS on July 19. Course developer (David Ruddy) submitted his course to CEIG for final approval after revising it based on feedback from attendees. The next offering is at ALA Midwinter in Seattle, with a second IDS following.
  4. CE Course 5 (Digital Project Management Basics) is on target for December 2006 completion. The first offering is scheduled for December 8 in Chicago.

Completing our charge: We are still on track to complete our charge and disband by the end of January 2007, the revised date we proposed this past January.

Respectfully submitted,

Caroline R. Miller
