Monograph Aggregator Task Group
Background
On July 28, 2004, the Policy Committee of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging
agreed that a task group should be established to develop a reference guide
to data elements for machine created monographic records. The Steering Committee
is charging the Standing Committee on Automation to set-up the group and follow-up
on its work.
Charge:
Develop a reference guide that lists the required data elements for
machine-derived and machine-generated monographic records. The guide should
include practical and detailed guidelines for application.
The Task Group should begin its work by reviewing the data elements in machine-derived
and machine-generated monographic records found in the Final Report of
the 2nd Task Group on Journals in Aggregator Databases. The recommendations
should also be reviewed in light of recent developments in practices for cataloging
both born-digital and digitized monographs.
Examples of the types of additional guidelines needed include:
spelling out
the content of 245 $h instructions for transforming microform records (including
adjustments to 008) instructions regarding disposition of
300 field when adapting records for print version instructions regarding
handling of dates in both 260 and 008.
The new task group should also propose a mechanism for reviewing these guidelines
periodically in light of changing standards and practices.
This guide will provide a useful reference for libraries seeking to acquire
such records, and to vendors and publishers seeking to provide them. It
will be posted prominently on the PCC web site.
Objective:
Here is the objective in response to the suggestion that the tactical plan
include something to do with partnering with information providers to create
usable records.
Objective 1.3.2. Publish a reference guide for machine-derived
and machine-generated monographic records.
Tasks, responsibilities, and time line for Objective 1.3.2.
Building on the work of a previous task force on serial aggregations,
the Standing Committee on Automation has charged a monographic aggregator task
force to develop a reference guide that lists required data elements and includes
practical and detailed guidelines for application.
The product of this new group's work is expected in the summer of
2005. Upon approval of their report, LC staff will mount the guide on the PCC
web site by November 1, 2005.
The members of the Task Group are:

Becky Culbertson

Time-frame:
Work should be completed no later than the ALA annual meeting
in the summer of 2005. An interim report should be submitted by Mar. 15,
2005.
