Structured Subject Headings

Your screen will refresh with the web form to enter subject search terms. The LC Subject Headings interface provides you with options to browse and/or search by:

  • Structured subject heading
  • Unstructured subject heading
  • Structured free-floating subdivision
  • Unstructured free-floating subdivision
  • Keyword
  • Classification number
In the simulation below, we have entered the terms railroad bridges--vibration in the Structured subject heading box. This search requires that you enter a subject heading string with -- (dashes) and is left match with automatic truncation. You will have options to select either the Search button or the Browse button. For the best results, use truncation in your terms and select the Browse button if you don't have the exact LC subject heading.

Select the Search button to see the search result. Next select the Browse button to see a browse list which is sorted in a structured manner, with heading-subdivision combinations listed first, followed by phrase headings that begin with the term or terms that you input. Finally, select the Reset button to try an Unstructured subject heading search.
