Transition of MARC Distribution Service for GPO Cataloging Records

 from LC/CDS to GPO

The Government Printing Office (GPO) is in the final implementation stages of a new Integrated Library System (ILS). See www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/cip/index.html for further details regarding their implementation time line and the expectation of a temporary reduction in record production during the implementation period.

The implementation of an ILS provides an opportunity for GPO to plan a record distribution service that will meet the continuing and future needs of MDS-GPO subscribers.

CDS will continue to distribute GPO cataloging records through the end of the 2005 subscription year (December 31, 2005). After that date, records will be distributed directly from GPO. CDS will work with GPO and with customers to the MDS-GPO service on a successful transition.

Below is a questionnaire from GPO. The results of the survey will be used by GPO in planning for the new record distribution system. Please respond to the survey and email your answers directly to Laurie Hall at GPO (lhall@gpo.gov).

Questions about the transition of the MDS-GPO service can be directed to:

Survey on Distribution of GPO Cataloging Records

For future planning of Government Printing Office (GPO) cataloging record distribution service, Library of Congress Cataloging Distribution Service (CDS) and GPO would like your feedback on current record distribution and how we may be able to improve the service in 2006. Please take the time to complete this brief survey.

Are you interested in continuing to receive files of GPO cataloging records?

             ☐ Yes    ☐ No

How frequently do you wish to receive the records?

             ☐ Daily? ☐ Weekly? ☐ Semimonthly? ☐ Monthly?

What is your preferred method of receiving records files?

             ☐ FTP? ☐ E-mail?

What aspects of record distribution would you like to see changed?

How helpful do you find the record and label files CDS creates?

☐ Not helpful ☐ Somewhat helpful ☐ Helpful ☐ Very helpful

How do you use the record and label files?

GPO is in the process of implementing the Aleph ILS. Records in Aleph will contain the Aleph identification number in the 001 field and the OCLC number in the 035 field; we will cease using the 035 to record the print Monthly Catalog id number. What impact will these changes have on your operations?

Would you like the 019 field, which contains the OCLC numbers of duplicate records that have been deleted and replaced by the current record, included in distributed records?

             ☐ Yes    ☐ No

Would you like the 012 field, which is the CONSER fixed length field, included in distributed records?

             ☐ Yes    ☐ No

Further comments?

Thank you for your input. GPO will compile the results for analysis by CDS and GPO.

Please e-mail or fax the completed survey by May16, 2005 to:
