The TYPE attribute for the parent <list> has to be set to "deflist" in order to use <defitem> elements. Other lists, such as "simple," "random," and "ordered" do not contain <label>s.
Do not confuse with the attribute called LABEL, which identifies the kind of information in an element for public display.
