A cooperative endeavor between the Interpretive
Programs Office and the Office of Strategic Initiatives, this institute invites

through the Library's primary and web based materials. Participants will leave
with strategies and materials they can use in their school districts, schools,
and classrooms.

Or Saturday, January 21, 2006; 9 am - 4 pm
Where
The Learning Center, First Floor, James Madison Building of the Library of
Congress, 101 Independence Ave. SE, Washington, DC
Audience
Educators from around the country
Purpose
Provide educators with an opportunity to engage in discovery learning and
to develop strategies to teach about the Great Depression through Library of
Congress primary sources.
The Institute will feature the exhibition Bound for Glory: America in Color. Bound
for Glory is the first major exhibition of the little known color images
taken by photographers of the Farm Security Administration/Office of War
Information. These vivid scenes and portraits capture the effects of the
Depression on America's rural and small town populations, the nation's subsequent
economic recovery and industrial growth, and the country's great mobilization
for World War II.
Educators will also learn how to make the American Memory virtual collections
REAL for students. Participants will learn to use images, texts, maps, sound
recordings, and films, and will engage in replicable activities that will help
make this era in our country's history "come alive" for students.
